AUDITORIUM RENOVATIONS
In preparation for serving as a Heartland Film venue, the auditorium now houses a true movie-theater-quality audio, video, and lighting system, complete with an on-stage fog machine. (We enjoyed watching the Women's World Cup finals on the massive screen!) And, thanks to individual supporters, TCC Gives, and Bosma Enterprises, visitors with visual impairments can be guided from the parking lot all the way to their braille- marked seats using BlindSquare, an app that uses proximity sensors and voice guidance.
We spent much of the design process consulting with Bosma Enterprises, and ISBVI students and staff, to make sure the access details are beneficial. For the first time ever, we are able to open our doors to the public and demonstrate what it truly means to be accessible for all.
The renovation process was emotionally up and down as we navigated selecting the right vendors. It's been exciting to see how even the contractors who were on site for only a day start to understand the impact of access. While the auditorium may not immediately appear very different, as soon as the new sound system turns on, you can feel it. What was once a dusty mess of cables and old fixtures is now an exciting theater experience. And it was all completed just in time for the Inaugural Celebration.
