STUDENT LEADERSHIP CLUB

Steve Sipe, Director of Exhibition and Graphic Design at the Eiteljorg Museum says: “I think we are all privileged to have the opportunity to get to know and work with such a fine group of young adults. This experience has greatly enhanced my awareness of the need for improved inclusivity in relation to the arts, and I am looking forward to our partnership as we begin to develop concepts that we will work toward integrating into the museum experience.”

To help the staff better understand barriers to access, the Club brought along special glasses that replicated several different impairments, like astigmatism or cataracts. The exercise immediately brought clarity to the staff. Details like carpet textures and braille signs inside bathroom entryways became obstacles that sighted people wouldn't typically think of. Progress made!

Another arts partner, Capital City Chorus, began integrating acapella instruction with the students in choir in an effort to expand artistic experiences beyond just the students in the club. We look forward to having the Leadership Club deepen access at all of their performances. CCC doesn’t have their own space, they perform at different venues. The Leadership Club will work with the Chorus and help them to actively consider access points when choosing a venue to perform.

In the coming weeks and months, the Club will consult with Heartland Film to help them to consider different approaches to access during their film festivals.
