Eldridge, Ph.D, who lives in Japan and has written a number of books in both English and Japanese.

T e student of Japan’s navy will need to fi nd his or her detailed Japanese naval history elsewhere. Enthusiasts and modelers who strive to fi nd dramatic, meaningful, and detailed photographs of Japanese vessels will be no better served than by this book.

T is reviewer was greatly impressed by this volume and recommends it highly.

British small craſt , or “Coastal Forces,” a woefully under-studied subject from the past. While ship modelers may be familiar with Vosper boats due to the model kits issued in the past by Airfi x and others, other British types may not be so well-known. T is book fi lls that knowledge gap.

Norman Friedman’s lengthy introduction precedes page aſt er page of draſt ed plans by the late noted naval draſt sman John Lambert. Almost a fi ſt h of the book is taken up by the introduction, and it is jam- packed with 70-plus photos, most of which I have never seen before. In-action shots (one exciting shot features a boat launching two torpedoes at once, almost right at the camera!), close-up detail and crew pictures bring the subject to life. Avoiding the usual well-known publicity-type shots, Friedman supplies images aboard the vessels and immediately nearby, giving the reader detailed views of the boats in great clarity. Many diff ering paint schemes and weathering patterns are easily viewed here, although not in color. In fact, although all material is in black-and-white, most photographic quality is crisp and clear and printed at high resolution.

When one thinks of World War II “small craſt ,” the American PT boats, John F. Kennedy and PT-109 immediately spring to mind, along with the large, fast German E-boats. T is book, however, deals with

Friedman gives a comprehensive history of the design and development of these craſt and their weapons that would make an excellent book in its own right. Beginning in World War I, he traces the development of these vessels until the immediate post-World- War-II era. Types studied in this volume include
