14. T e spaces between the planks on the fi rst model needed to be made more uniform and had to be widened to 0.010”, a scale 1/8”, so caulking could be added later. I used a pair of thin saw blades to do that.


hull I widened the plank spacing with a pair of thin saw blades (Figure14) and cut the hull loose from the plug. T ere were a few problems I needed to address in the second build and all of those could be easily corrected: some of the planks did not lay down perfectly on the ribs, some planks could have met each other more closely, and a couple of ribs had stuck to the plug and broken off . (Figure 15)


It was the outside of this fi rst model that was important, though, and once the hull was sanded fair and the false keel, outer stem, washstrakes, and rub rails were added the construction was done. Figure


16 shows the model at this point. I had decided to add new caulking only to parts of a few seams on one side, simulating what might have been done in a repair, and fi lled all the rest with common spackling compound to level them off . T at can also be seen in the photograph.


T e second model, which would be fully detailed inside and out with a natural fi nish, followed directly. It was built exactly the same except the planks were edge glued to one another, there being no visible caulking, and I took more care in the fi t. One area that needed attention was how the planks met the
