Within the ship modeling world, I am probably an outlier. I build French eighteenth- to nineteenth- century warships in 1:160 scale. French because,
both before and aſt er the Revolution, the French constructed beautiful, well-designed ships for which excellent plans and descriptive monographs are available; 1:160 because I like small models and the challenge of “can I really make that?” Ultimately, I found that 1:160 is the smallest scale in which I can confi dently carve ship’s decorations and make working blocks for rigging.
