items resembling dulled linoleum knives that could be hammered along a seam to handmade versions made from old fi les with bent tangs. T ere were, and still are, many variations of all of these tools. I made a set to go in the diorama and they are shown in Figure 19. As an aside, traditional caulking mallets have a distinct shape and references I have been able to fi nd for that seem to indicate they produce a unique sound, or tone, when the caulking cotton is driven fully home, telling the shipwright to stop so as to not damage the seam or planking. Other ideas on the subject are welcomed.


T e late Steve Wheeler was a master modeler who contributed his knowledge freely to this community through his many articles and shop notes in the Journal and Ships in Scale. He also gave numerous talks to modeling groups and was a frequent award winner for his creations. He passed away on November 26, 2019 at the age of 75.
