GAG SSMN ETE Offering strategic guidance to students


As schools were planning how to begin the 2020/2021 school year, the Language Assessment Center (LAC) was busy preparing opening their office to serve the families who seek their services. Each year, the LAC team administers the Initial English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (I-ELPAC) to hundreds of students entering the public school system for the first time. The I-ELPAC measures English language proficiency and is used to determine if students qualify for English Learner services.


COVID-19 and Distance Learning have created some interesting obstacles for the team. In addition to developing practices that would adhere to health and safety guidelines while collecting valuable data on each student to determine services, the team was challenged with learning how to administer the newly created computer-based version of the I-ELPAC.


With support from Dr. Freed, Director of Assessment and Learning Technology, the LAC team established safety procedures for testing to keep students and families safe. Measures include social distancing, wearing face coverings, conducting temperature checks, frequent hand washing, routine disinfecting and sanitation of work areas and materials, and the use of plexiglass barriers. The team also offers Zoom remote testing for students unable to test in person. Thank you Ms. Berry, Ms. Garcia, Ms. Tapia, and Ms. Vargas for meeting the challenges of testing during this challenging time!
