National SEMIFINALIST
Scholarship Program
MERIT
The Nat ional Mer it Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition that shines a spotlight on brilliant students while encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence at all levels of education. High School students who meet published program entry and participation guidelines enter the National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the Preliminary SAT (PSAT) or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT), traditionally during their junior year in high school. Approximately 1.6 million high school students enter the program each year and have the opportunity to compete for scholarship and awards financed by U.S. colleges and universities that range from $500 to $2,500 .
Semifinalists are the highest scoring seniors in each state on the PSAT. Qualifying scores vary from state to state and from year to year, but scores of all Semifinalists are extremely high. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and requirements.
