200 sixth-grade girls empowered themselves Saturday, March 3 for the leap from elementary school to junior high. The girls and their parents participated in the 12th annual
Stepping Up for Girls event at Don Lugo High in Chino, sponsored by Soroptimist International of the Chino Valley, Inc. Soroptimist member Charleen King coordinated the event and provided the welcome. A long list of speakers talked to the girls about what to expect in junior high, social media and internet safety, bullying, exploring their talents, the importance of education, individual and family counseling services available through the City of Chino, and hairstyling. The event also featured a continental breakfast, lunch, opportunities to win prizes, and goodie bags filled with school supplies and more. Three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Lea Amico, a Don Lugo High graduate, urged the girls to find out what they love to do and pursue it. She also told them to learn from mistakes. ?If I fail, if I mess up, what have I learned from that,? she said. Junior high age-appropriate fashions were modeled throughout the event by Eagle Canyon Elementary students Jaidyn Loggins and Julia
