Boosting the bottom line with integrated end-to-end telematics.
A Q&A about ORBCOMM’s truck management solution and two-way asset tracking and control within
McLeod’s LoadMaster. ORBCOMM is a global leader in the industrial Internet of Things, offering the most complete end-to-end telematics solutions in the transportation industry. ORBCOMM’s Vice President of Transportation Solutions, Chris MacDonald, discusses the value of asset tracking, truck and driver management and integration with McLeod Software.
What’s driving demand for telematics in the transportation industry today?
There are many challenges – driver acquisition and retention, new regulations and the continuous goal to reduce costs and increase operational efficiencies.
Companies need to keep drivers happy and well-paid, and telematics can help. Telematics also helps them comply with regulations, such as the ELD (Electronic Logging Device) mandate, and enables fleet managers to track, monitor and control their assets, which is really all about boosting the bottom line.
How do telematics boost the bottom line? Telematics has always been about improving operational efficiency, reducing costs and increasing safety and compliance by enabling real-time visibility and control of transport assets.
Telematics optimizes trailer utilization, improves tractor-trailer ratios and reduces maintenance costs. Our solutions help minimize cargo loss due to temperature deviations and theft, reduce fuel consumption and more.
Improvements in technology over the past couple years are now taking things to a new level. Telematics delivers additional features, such as tire pressure monitoring, weigh station bypass and truck navigation, that save even more money on fuel, the second largest expense after driver wages.
For reefers, our telematics solutions simplify FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) compliance. You can remotely monitor pre- cool progress, temperature set points and schedules. Telematics can help maintain cargo integrity across the supply chain and notify you of problems.
We’re the largest provider of telematics to the North America reefer trailer market, with approximately 80% market share.
How do telematics help retain drivers? By maximizing driver time and efficiency. For instance, you can easily identify and reduce detention issues for drivers at specific yards and encourage shippers and receivers to maximize their flows. Our solutions can help drivers track and log hours of service and maximize their road time. Inefficiencies become clearer and drivers spend more time on the road.
How does ORBCOMM integrate with McLeod Software? Our integration with McLeod LoadMaster connects the location and status of assets with dispatch on a single screen, making it easier to manage operations. We offer two-way capabilities within LoadMaster, which enables fleet managers to receive information and send commands from their dispatch screen. Industry leaders like Swing Transport use the ORBCOMM-McLeod solution, so we know it delivers results.
We also recently acquired Blue Tree Systems, which has extended our capabilities. Blue Tree’s truck management solution integrates with McLeod to help drivers comply with ELD regulations, maximize driving hours, manage their daily work flow and plan routes. The dispatcher can also see how many hours a driver has left, so it’s easier to assign jobs appropriately. And our auto sign-
