encouraged to do their best. Help the driver by giving encouragement for commitment toward professionalism
and a job well done.
DRIVERS NEED Your Monitoring
Positive communication will reinforce their work habits and willingness to adapt to new work demands as they occur. Follow through if a driver does something special. Developing rapport with drivers is necessary for them to maintain a good work habit. It takes two!
DRIVERS NEED Your Feedback & Follow Up
Drivers need to know that you follow up on what you say every day. They need to know that you take their efforts and achievements seriously. They need to know that you care enough to follow up. Offer feedback and other constructive comments for improvement if needed. Reward and reinforce improvement.
DRIVERS NEED to Know Your Expectations
Your expectations must be communicated to them with each contact, then get their commitment to those expectations. Repeat your expectations, so they are clear. Offer expectations to reinforce good work habits. Then listen to their expectations.
DRIVERS NEED Consistency
Not all drivers are as organized as they need to be, nor are they always able to follow a daily routine without help. It is important to have a consistent line of communication that offers a positive routine to the driver. Offer support, ideas, and encouragement to help them become consistent in their efforts.
Each of the partnerships developed with drivers is a necessary ingredient for the driver’s success. To get their commitment, you must give your commitment. It’s not difficult, but it takes two. Like the great folk singer John Prine said in a lyric, “just treat ‘em the same as you would your own name.”
And always remember that your actions are paramount to driver retention and satisfaction. Think before you act. Experience is a hard teacher, because she gives the test first and the lesson afterwards.
