TCA Profitability Program Groups Dive Deeper into Data, Launches Monthly Playbook

F

or more than fifteen years, the Truckload Carriers Association’s (TCA) successful Best Practice Group program has been accumulating monthly

financial and operational data from some of the best managed trucking companies in the world.

The program’s original intent was to allow carriers to compare their performance via standardized key performance indexes (KPIs). In recent years, the TCA Profitability Program (TPP) launched its first-ever performance ‘index’. This initial index, called the TPP 20, is comprised of the top 20 performing operators within the Best Practice Group program.

profitable results (April thru June primarily). Flatbed carriers started seeing demand subside in August and has continued thru today. Explanations are varied for this drop off, but almost everyone in the Flatbed space has experienced this effect. The confusing part is some of the indicators that have been traditionally been correlated to Flatbed demand have remained strong, namely the Industrial Production Index (IPI) and the Baker Hughes Rig Count.

For Dryvan operators, there was a definite freight ‘lull’ which came late August and lasted thru September, but demand seems to have picked up (above same period last year), especially for those within our TPP High Performers Index.

This new program feature, along with the launch of the TPP index, is part of a strategy by TCA to add value to the existing and growing dataset built within the TPP initiative.

In general, the Refrigerated carriers haven’t missed a beat since early 2018. Although most saw a slight increase in Operating Ratios in September, they still bested the average for each month in 2018 versus the same period in each of the last three years. With the Holiday season upon us, we don’t expect to see much different thru December.

Operating Ratios (CF & OO) - TPP 20 Index Results

As part of its partnership, TCA has recently developed and distributed its first ever ‘Monthly Playbook’, exclusively for Best Practice Group members. This monthly report highlights timely (anonymized and aggregated) results and commentary from Best Practice Group members, and pairs that with exclusive data and commentary from FreightWaves’ data science, economic and weather experts.

Methodology is based on rolling six-month average Gross Margin performance, for carriers with a minimum of 36 months of reported results. The reporting companies are reviewed every six months, and composition is adjusted accordingly.

In November of 2018, TCA announced its partnership with the data science team at FreightWaves whose first initiative—Truckload Indexes—tracks the pulse of the truckload market. It provides the public with a snapshot of the stories, data, personalities, opportunities, and challenges facing this segment, which many refer to as the “Main Street of Trucking.”

This anonymized and aggregated index, provides viewers with a clear picture of high-performing enterprises within trucking. TPP plans to launch similar indexes for Refrigerated, Dry Van, and Flatbed within the next twelve months. These planned launches correspond to the continued growth of the TPP’s inGauge reporting population, which currently has nearly 200 carrier profiles in our database.
