Outstanding Contribution to Surrey Award
PROFESSOR GAVIN WHICHELLO BSc Human and Physical Sciences, 1974
Gavin has been recognised for his sustained contribution to the University for a number of years, as visiting professor in Surrey Business School, student mentor, advisory board member and PhD scholarship funder.
When Professor Gavin Whichello returned to campus many years after graduating to remember old times, he was so impressed with what he saw that it has led to a long relationship with the University and Surrey Business School in particular.
“It was curiosity that brought me back,” said Gavin. “I met with academics and was inspired by the University’s openness to new ideas and thought how it promoted itself was excellent. Surrey and Andy Adcroft (Deputy Dean) presented a very compelling case to be involved.”
A working-class boy, Gavin was motivated to succeed. He has brought his successful experience as an entrepreneur and business leader to support the Business School in a variety of roles. He is owner of Qube Learning, a leading national training provider specialising in vocational qualifications and core skills, and before that established Training International, which became the UK’s largest PC training company. He also co-founded Winmail, a global leader in the messaging marketplace, and has held a series of executive roles at both public and private technology companies.
Gavin has made a huge contribution to Surrey Business School and his latest involvement is one very close to his heart. A strong believer in widening participation, he has been instrumental in the development of the Surrey Innovation and Digital Enterprise Academy (SurreyIDEA), a radical new approach to create the next generation of entrepreneurs (detailed on p24).
“This degree is aimed at what I call the Disrupters – those who show strong entrepreneurial potential but don’t have the traditional academic background. As a South East London boy, I want to support these young people and give them help and the chance to change the world.”
