EXPANDING HORIZONS

Expanding horizons

THE FIRM FOUNDATIONS ON WHICH THE UNIVERSITY OF SURREY IS BUILT STRETCH BACK TO THE LATE NINETEENTH CENTURY, WHEN BATTERSEA POLYTECHNIC OPENED ITS DOORS TO 2,406 STUDENTS AGED BETWEEN 16 AND 25. ITS ETHOS WAS TO PROVIDE GREATER ACCESS TO FURTHER AND HIGHER EDUCATION, SPECIALISING IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.

Surrey is still committed to upholding the strong tradition of educating talented students today, regardless of their social background, and actively promotes widening participation and outreach programmes.

Inclusivity and connectedness run through our strategy and this year we have developed two innovative programmes that support the University’s overall mission to transform lives and shape the world for a better future.

WHAT’S THE BIG IDEA?

A radical new approach to create the next generation of entrepreneurs is set to take its first students next year thanks to support from two of our donors.

The Surrey Innovation and Digital Enterprise Academy (SurreyIDEA) will be the first of its kind in Europe, offering a two-year undergraduate degree and recruiting students from a wide range of backgrounds.

SurreyIDEA is the first of its kind in Europe and will nurture entrepreneurial talent

Widening participation is core to the programme and relationships will be built with schools, colleges and community organisations to identify young people with exceptional entrepreneurial potential. The aim is that half of the intake in each year will receive a scholarship in lieu of all tuition fees.

It has been made possible by a generous gift from long-term Surrey friends Alberto and Maria Verme who share the

University’s vision of inspiring young people to explore innovative ideas and make a positive difference.

Professor Andy Adcroft, Deputy Dean of Surrey Business School (SBS), said: “We are looking for students who have the potential to be entrepreneurs but may not have a traditional academic background. It will open up SBS to a different and non-traditional cohort of students.”

The SurreyIDEA will launch the accelerated undergraduate degree in Enterprise Creation in autumn 2020, together with a one-year postgraduate course.

Alberto, EMEA Chairman at Citigroup, said: “Maria and I truly believe that education can change lives for the better and the SurreyIDEA is an opportunity to transform business and enterprise teaching in a way that is contemporary, innovative and distinctive.”
