WHY GETTING A GOOD night’s sleep IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH
ON AVERAGE WE SPEND A THIRD OF OUR LIVES ASLEEP, BUT MANY PEOPLE DO NOT GET THE REST THEY NEED – APPROXIMATELY 10 TO 20 PER CENT OF THE EUROPEAN AND US POPULATION REPORT FREQUENT SLEEP DISRUPTION.
Worry and stress, computers and taking work home are often blamed, but the cost of all those sleepless nights is more than just bad moods and a lack of focus. Regular poor sleep puts us at risk of serious medical conditions, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes, and can shorten our life expectancy.
Great strides have been made towards understanding the processes involved in sleep in the last few decades and Surrey has been at the forefront of advancing technologies to study sleep in depth.
From our specialist Surrey Sleep Research Centre to scientists within the School of Biosciences and Medicine, to sociologists and psychologists, the University has an international reputation for its research into the mechanisms and functions of sleep in humans and animals.
Surrey research is making a vital difference to ensuring everyone can get a good night’s sleep.
