Thank you to everyone who took the time to nominate for the Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Awards 2019 – we received our highest ever number of entries!

Now in their seventh year, the awards recognise and celebrate the tremendous impact our graduates have around the world. The President, Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Lu, said: “This has been a stellar year and the standard was extremely impressive. Our winners have made big contributions at all levels of society and are wonderful role models, demonstrating real impact.

“I would like to thank everyone who nominated – we are very proud of all of our alumni’s achievements and the talent shown through this year’s awards.”

Alumnus of the Year PROFESSOR PAUL STONE

BSc Mechanical Engineering, 1975 and PhD Mechanical Engineering, 1978

Paul has been recognised for his exceptional career and volunteering activities, particularly within Surrey Business School.

Since retiring in 2010, Paul has been a strong supporter of Surrey, bringing his wealth of business experience to help students and the University – as Chair of Surrey Business School Advisory Board, mentor, visiting lecturer and ambassador, encouraging other alumni and businesses to contribute to our success.

One of the highlights of Paul’s 32-year career with Shell International was the opportunity to become fluent in Portuguese and Spanish. Despite being posted all around the world in senior executive roles, he never thought he could master another language.

Connecting with people from around the world has been a consistent theme for Paul both at University and during his career and he believes that this has been a valuable experience.

“We had a very diverse group of students which helped give me an understanding of different cultures,” he said. “I spent half of my business career overseas. It gave me a much broader view of the world and I made many great friends in the process.”

A strong pull for Paul to come to Surrey in 1972 was to join the successful student rugby team and it has given him some great memories. “A big highlight of my time at Surrey was creating real friendships from playing rugby – and we still meet up today. We all remember the demanding marine PE instructor who trained us – he showed no mercy!”
