and Vice-Chancellor
I have had the privilege of meeting hundreds of Surrey graduates who not only helped shape the University as students but have gone on to make their own mark in extraordinary ways.
I am fortunate to be able to recognise these achievements formally through the Vice-Chancellor’s Alumni Awards. The calibre of alumni nominated for our 2019 awards was extremely high and I was proud to read of the impact Surrey graduates are making in many important fields.
I congratulate our seven winners – whose inspiring stories you can read in this issue – and thank all those who made nominations, making 2019 our highest ever number of entries.
Since our foundation, the University has been defined by the energy, determination and achievements of its students, staff and alumni who all help our institution contribute so much to society.
This spirit of ambition and collaboration is evident not just within the University and Guildford but also at our reunions and receptions – this year alone we have held 57 alumni events around the world.
The contribution our alumni make in their communities received official recognition in the latest THE University Impact Rankings against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. We were placed ninth in the world in the ‘Good Health and Wellbeing’ category for the impact our graduates make to the health professions, and across all categories we were in the top 100 globally – a remarkable achievement.
Research is at the heart of our mission to make a real impact for the benefit of society, and in this issue we detail a range of projects that are making a big difference to people and communities: from using space satellites to detect high-level corruption, to understanding how a lack of sleep can affect our health and wellbeing; and from finding new antibiotics to fight infections, to developing autonomous systems to work safely alongside people at home or at work.
I want to offer my heartfelt thanks to all our alumni for your ongoing support: we rely on all of you to help us grow and be the very best we can be. Please spread the word and encourage your fellow graduates to join us on this journey.
Surrey will always be part of your story, and every one of you will always be ‘forever Surrey’.
