ON TREND Little by little

MICROBOUTIQUES ARE OFFICIALLY a thing in Miami. Opening this summer, Upper Buena Vista—a development brimming with petite boutiques as small as 250 square feet— brings the emerging, small-store trend (already big in London and New York) to the Magic City. “Upper Buena Vista is

scheduled to be Miami’s first microboutique outdoor village, with vibrant makers, wellness gurus and homegrown culinary concepts,” says Michael Aviv, CEO of BVM Development and cofounder of the project, with David Lahmy. “The property will be a refuge for creativity, making it the ideal location for community-focused artisans.” And downsizing has its

bonuses, like cheap rent. “UBV is offering tenants of all kinds an affordable opportunity to showcase their unique work and grow [a customer base] with long-term leases created to support smaller businesses,” says Aviv. Nestled between Miami’s

Design District and Little Haiti, the open-air pocket village will

boast a total of 40,000 square feet with 22 retail shops, 17 microboutiques and five petite boutiques. Thus far, confirmed tenants include salon Contesta Rock Hair (contestarockhair.com), Sangre de mi Sangre’s handmade Mexican jewelry (sdemis.com) and custom alterations shop

Sew on Set Tailor (sewonset tailor.com). Aviv and Lahmy, who are

regular travelers, drew design inspiration from personal wanderlust. Peppered throughout the space are design touches gleaned from cities such as Tel Aviv; Thong Sala, Thailand; Tokyo; and Tulum,

Mexico. Lush vegetation and art installations fill the sunny spaces, while inside shops are replete with wooden finishes, industrial accents and distressed material elements. “This is the place where curious discovery meets thoughtful craftsmanship; it’s a sanctuary for passionate makers where the real revenue is community,” adds Lahmy, who assures us that UBV has more to offer locals than just shopping. “This is your chance to relish in the fruits of your city’s creative culture. Watch the seeds planted by curated local artisans and spirited merchants take root before your eyes.” ■Maria Tettamanti à 5010 NE Second Ave (786-671-2626, facebook.com/upperbuenavista)

HOW TO...

Pack the perfect carry-on

PLANNING A WEEKEND getaway? Fight the temptation to check a bag. “Nothing feels more liberating than zooming past the crowded luggage carousel at the airport,” says Bruce Cannella, cofounder and owner of BASE (2215 NW Second Ave; 305-531-4982, baseworld.com) the popular men’s lifestyle shop in Wynwood. We couldn’t agree more, so we grilled the globe-trotter for tips on traveling light.

1 Maximize space. Be sure your carry-on luggage complies with

airline regulations. Opt for a bag with double-sided compartments like the Herschel Supply Co. Trade carry-on ($150), which meets the size requirement and gives you more space. Combine this piece with a personal item, such as a backpack or tote,

for easy access to your ID, laptop, reading material and snacks.

2 Think multipurpose. Choose interchangeable pieces for added versatility in your wardrobe. Wrinkle-free

pieces, like what you’ll find in Nanamica’s Alphadry collection, are ideal for day-to-night dressing.

3 Fold like a pro. Choose a hard surface, and start by folding items as you would typically see in retail stores.

Fold in the arms of a shirt, the body in half and then once more until you have a rectangular shape (about the size of a large pencil case). Make sure pants are folded down to the same size as shirts, and neatly stack items in piles before packing.

in your luggage on their sides, like books on a shelf, as opposed to packing face-up. The tightly packed rows allow extra space for a toiletry kit—and souvenirs.

4 Make it a puzzle. Place the stacks of folded rectangles May 18–August 16, 2017 Time Out Miami
