What’s Up in Miami

That’s the ticket!

Brightline, South Florida’s new high-speed rail system, is on track for summer. By Virginia Gil

FINALLY, A VICTORY for Miami commuters. Express rail system Brightline

arrives this summer, bringing faster train service from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Each leg of the journey takes approximately 30 minutes—versus the 45 to 60 minutes it takes on the regional Tri-Rail system—and is full of perks. Free Wi-Fi, outlets at every seat and bicycle racks on board are just some of what passengers can expect from Brightline. Plus, all cars are ADA- accessible and pet-friendly. BrightBlue is the first of

several flashy trains to arrive at the station, with BrightPink, BrightRed, BrightOrange and BrightGreen scheduled to follow later this year. In total, 10 sets of seven-car trains, which can each carry up to 356 passengers, will run the 235-mile route (service to Orlando is planned for 2018). Passengers can

choose from Smart and Select coaches—think economy and business class, respectively. The differences between the two options are few, but those who spring for the upgrade (ticket prices were not available at press time) enjoy wider, ergonomic leather seats, complimentary parking at the station and a meal on board. Though food may not really

factor into your decision to upgrade. Brightline’s downtown Miami station sits inside MiamiCentral, an 11-acre mixed-use development that is home to Central Fare—the city’s first food hall. Set to open in late summer, the 50,000-square- foot facility features more than 20 vendors and six restaurants, including some making their Miami debut: Monger by the

Voltaggio Brothers, from Top Chef alums Bryan and Michael Voltaggio, and Los Angeles– based Neapolitan pizzeria 800 Degrees. Local favorites such as Little Havana’s Azucar Ice Cream Company, Midtown’s Blackbrick Chinese and Brickell’s Toasted Bagelry & Deli are also expected. Why ride the rail if you

have a car? If avoiding I-95’s proverbial traffic jams doesn’t tempt you to ride the train, Brightline’s perks for locals might—like the option to buy bundled and discounted passes. Plus, passengers have access to ride-sharing opportunities once they arrive at the station. Taking the train to Sawgrass Mills? Need a lift to another destination? Connections to nearby sites can be added to your ticket. Brightline will always go the extra mile. à gobrightline.com
