Q&A WITH THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

What is your most eff ective resident engagement activity, and why?

We get the highest level of participation in exercise classes. Our residents love to move and keep themselves as fl exible as possible. We have traditional exercise classes alternating with Zumba and Yoga. All classes end with deep breathing, for centering.

Janet Bradley, CDAL Executive Director Bedford Court

Sunrise Senior Living

Music therapy is a universal language and our most eff ective resident engagement activity. While our residents enjoy live musical performances, they are especially engaged when they can actively participate, such as in sing-alongs or drumming circles. Singing exercises the vocal cords and speech processes, while playing instruments elicits range of motion. Hearing familiar tunes allows residents to reminisce and stimulate cognition through recollection. Music engages the mind, body, and spirit.

Captain's Table is a Brandywine Senior Living signature program where I, as the executive director, have a monthly dinner with fi ve residents. Residents receive a special invitation to enjoy a fi ve-course meal, served by our dining services director. It is always a wonderful experience, allowing myself, as the "Captain," to spend quality time with each resident in a more intimate setting. We all leave feeling connected, by sharing our pasts, learning new things about each other, and forging a lasting familiarity.

By building meaningful relationships with our residents, we create a resident- centered program. There isn't one activity that is ever most eff ective. Our residents have rich histories of special interests and talents. Incorporating these allows for moments of fond refl ection, teaching opportunities, vibrant interactions, and truly engaged residents.
