In This Field, Quality is Personal
“Ultimately the bond of all companionship, whether in marriage or in friendship, is conversation,” said the very social playwright Oscar Wilde. Today’s science would agree: More studies are fi nding simply being social creates bonds that are good for your health. In this Quality Issue, we look at how senior living is designed to foster social interaction, and the resulting benefi ts for residents’ quality of life (p.6). It’s particularly important in dining, where communities are off ering new options and opportunities to meet and
greet (p.10). And as a hard-of-hearing person, I was happy to get the news that socializing via screens works, too (p.12). Whatever your language or form of communication, what matters is the quality of the connection. Conversations abounded at the 2019 Argentum Senior Living Executive Conference, with more than 2,500 senior living professionals, a packed Expo, and six learning tracks. Catch up with who said what (p. 14) and who was honored (p.18 and pp.50-51). One energetic conference session was the “Risky Business” panel discussion, where legal and senior living experts shared knowledge on trending issues including cannabis use. Senior living leaders sought more information on this fast-changing issue; see our wrap-up (p.34). On a personal note, my parents moved to a CCRC more than 20 years ago, and it was one of the best moves they made. They continued to work (my father consulting on artifi cial intelligence and nuclear engineering, my mother on children’s literature), but they also rediscovered their love of writing and theater that had brought them together in high school. They held memoir workshops and put on community-written musicals with casts of dozens. Their nine grandchildren and fi ve great-grandchildren visited and fell asleep in their arms at dinner, lined up for the chocolate fountain at brunch, and splashed in the pool. When, at age 86, the cancer my father had beaten long ago came back aggressively, he was able to move to a higher level of care at the community, where my mother and we children could be with him at all hours for that fi nal week. He asked that memorial donations be made to the community’s scholarship fund for its workers. My mother lives there with her friends and half our family nearby, and not only does she know everyone who works there by name, but she also knows their children’s names. It was and is their community and their true home. For us, quality is personal—and I respect that it’s so meaningful to you, too. As the new editor for Senior Living Executive, I’m living the dream writing about this important industry. I welcome your thoughts, ideas, pitches; please email
