Change Is An Inside Job, But It Affects Everyone

“The changes we dread most may contain our salvation.” —Barbara Kingsolver

Unprecedented. The word is a fair definition for this time; that’s why it’s used so often. Yet the only way we can respond to this time is to look to the past, to precedence. What worked before when I faced an obstacle that resembled this? What stories have others told me about getting through a time like this? The qualities in managing change have a lot in common

with being resilient in a crisis: Overcommunicate, be transparent, uphold your culture, values, and mission. One difference may be that while a crisis is a command situation, change is collaborative; a change created without listening to everyone who may be affected by it won’t be a change for long or for the better. Find more insights on change in this issue: • Company leaders talk about how they have weathered changes and what they have learned, p.8

Artificial intelligence is changing the senior living industry from workforce to administration to quality improvement. Find out how it’s happening and what to look out for: p.16

• The pandemic brought to the fore a challenge that had been building for some time: loneliness and social isolation. Learn about some design, technology, and activity changes that could be solutions: p.22

• For some of us, the workplace has changed completely. What are some ideas that can help keep remote workers feeling like they’re part of the team? p.26

• We’re starting a new page for executive director voices—check it out and be part of it. p.35

Finally, both the pandemic and the political climate have changed our lives in many ways—making many of us eager to be part of the solution. Argentum Advocates, our new program, makes this possible. It’s a way that we can help you get your voice heard on policy or regulatory changes in the senior living industry. See page 36 on how to get involved.

Having to listen to each other and work side-by-side for positive change in senior living could indeed be our salvation. It has never been more important or more achievable.
