The Senior Living Cer- tification Commission (SLCC) continues to enhance the CDAL program and improve the process for certification, allowing for more flexibility for busy senior living professionals. Here are some of the exciting changes:

Test Any Time Test windows have been removed. Candi- dates can now schedule their exam at any time… so they can work the test around their schedule and not the other way around. In addition, test results will be available imme- diately following completion of the exam.

now only need one year of experience as an executive director to qualify to take the CDAL exam, because eligibility require- ments have been modified to reflect that such management skills as budgeting, sales, leadership, human resources, and other key indicators can be acquired through experi- ence in other industries such as hospitality, healthcare and real estate, for example.

More Resources Available for Exam Preparation The Assisted Living Executive Director Community Primer, the Online Practice Test, and the CDAL Prep Course provide a deep dive into skills and responsibilities critical to the jobs of senior living executive directors. An e-learning course is also in development.

More Insight The CDAL Candidate handbook has been expanded to provide candidates with more information regarding the subjects covered

on the CDAL examination. This handbook also includes sample test questions, a copy of the SLCC Code of Conduct, and an overview of the policies used to govern the CDAL program. “The CDAL program continues to attract

participation from executive directors and department leaders who want to better po- sition themselves for career advancement,” said John Schulte, executive director, Senior Living Certification Commission. “The CDAL program is designed to promote professionalism and recognizes those who demonstrate the high degree of proficiency needed for successful leadership of assisted living communities. We hope these improve- ments allow more executive directors to participate in the CDAL program.” As of December 2018, there were more than 500 CDALs across the United States.
