EDITOR'S LETTER

Beauty and the Brain

Welcome to the inaugural issue of 2019. We’re beginning the year with a look at Aging and all of its marvels and mysteries. It’s a topic of deep relevance to senior living leaders that’s addressed in all facets of society ranging from arts and the media to science. In this issue beginning on page 36, we take a look at how arts improve the aging process and off er a better experience through creativity and expression. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend an Arts and Aging opening exhibit event last fall at the Phillips Collection in

Washington, DC. The internationally renowned museum partnered with the nonprofi t Arts for the Aging to showcase older adults’ artwork created in senior living and adult day care centers. The art teachers and seniors were brilliant and discussed how the process of moving around the community, interacting, and creating artwork helped to stimulate them mentally and physically. Their feelings and interactions, and reactions to stimuli like oil paints or poignant poetry are also related to brain science. In “Untangling the Mysteries of the Brain” on page 14, we dive into the science behind Alzheimer’s disease and the many initiatives that are underway in the research community to better understand this growing, confounding tangle of the brain. Thankfully, there’s hope (and sometimes hard work) in the form of diet, exercise, and social interaction as scientists continue to work toward fi nding a cure. In a fun feature on page 6 that’s very apropos as the nation’s fi lm fans just fi nished turning their attention from the Oscars, Senior Living Executive had the privilege of speaking with some of Hollywood’s cleverest minds, including the venerable actor Judd Hirsch to discuss how aging is portrayed in the fi lm and television industry and how stereotypes still permeate American culture.

One of the brightest spots for me in putting together this issue was speaking with Jeni Berry, the face of Blue Bonnet margarine for 38 years who expanded her skills as a model to become an unoffi cial lobbyist for the margarine industry. Jeni is currently a senior living resident enjoying musical theater and the programming available at her Florida community. Her advice for keeping a nimble mind and body – every day, pray that you brighten someone’s day, even if just a little bit. Thank you to Jeni for brightening my day, and the days of so many of the people you’ve touched over 93 years and keeping the message strong. Read more about Jeni on page 34.
