winter in the south. Her mother taught her to sing and dance while she would go to school “here and there.” “I learned so much because I was always in the capitals of the state. My mother would take me to museums and teach me. I knew a little bit more about history, geography, and other things from traveling than most of the other kids in school. ...I learned so much because I never met a stranger.” Her younger brother developed Alzhei- mer’s disease and is in a nursing home.
Berry, who grew up with him singing in the car on long road trips says when she visits or calls him and she starts singing, he remembers the song and can “sing every word, every note.” Today, Berry likes to sleep in after years
of getting up early. In my community, “I can do what I want, whenever I want. I enjoy the people I meet; most of the people who live here have traveled all over the world, and we have adventures to talk about. I moved from my condo on the beach, and I thought
I would miss it. But I love my view, my apart- ment and being next to laundry. Mostly, I like the entertainment – there’s so much music and singing. And last year I went on four cruises, but when I got back I said I’m so happy to be back here.” Jeni Freeland Berry is a fi rm believer in
positivity and spreading joy: “I pray every morning that please, let me brighten some- one’s day, just a little bit.”
