owned the property since the late 19th century. “Their father, who died some years before, had been something of a war hero and he’d accumulated an interesting collection of First World War-related posters, some of which are displayed on the walls of the second staircase. We bought those with the house, alongside some furniture and other artworks we liked such as the large garden painting in the sitting room, painted by Paul Veran, an artist friend of the family.”


STYLISH COMFORT When refurbishing, the couple’s choice includes many antique and vintage fi nds that give the house the feeling of having evolved over decades instead of a couple of years. The Nelsons were aiming for a look of understated comfort rather than cutting-edge new,


so additional furniture and paintings, along with some sets of vintage curtains were sourced from auctions in the UK, France and further afi eld. “I think David probably takes a closer interest in decorative matters than most men, so the result is very much a joint eff ort,” says Susie. “It’s a diff erent style of life to


the south of France, certainly. The ease of getting here is one advantage, but the Côte d’Or is a fascinating area to explore both on foot and further afi eld. Surrounded as we are by the Regional Natural Park of Morvan and a plethora of vineyards, châteaux, markets and pretty villages, we feel very fortunate to have found this particular house.” ■
