AED - AUTOMATIC


EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR As the length of time between cardiac arrest and defibrillation grows, the patient’s chance of survival decreases. This tells us early defibrillation remains the cornerstone therapy for Sudden Cardiac Arrest. One of the goals of this course is to reduce the delay between cardiac arrest and defibrillation. One of the determinants of successful defibrillation is the effectiveness of chest compressions. Defibrillation outcome is improved if interruptions in chest compressions are kept to a minimum.


One of the most important tools in the treatment of SCA is the rapid use of electricity to stimulate the heart muscle. This is called defibrillation. The faster a patient is defibrillated, the better the chance of surviving the event. A complete response including CPR and AED gives Sudden Cardiac Arrest victims the best chance of survival. Automatic External Defibrillators are currently required on commercial airlines and strongly recommended on corporate aircraft. In the past few years, many community and business AED programs have reported high survival rates in their areas. These programs should serve as models for improving responses to cardiac arrest across the country. The North American Public Access Defibrillation trial showed an improved survival rate for SCA victims.


Additionally, in places such as airports, sports arenas and casinos, survival rates have been reported as high as 74%. What these programs have in common is a practiced, coordinated response that includes trained workers and access to the life-saving equipment.


When AEDs first emerged in the early 1980s, a significant breakthrough in emergency cardiac care began. These new units could quickly and efficiently interpret cardiac rhythms and decide within seconds whether or not to shock a patient. They have evolved into the current units that have batteries lasting as long as 5 years and are relatively inexpensive. Because of their greater availability, they are in more and more places; recently, even appearing in private homes. Because of their effectiveness and reliability, AEDs are a great adjunct in emergency care and the treatment of SCA.
