Coram’s commitment to mental wellbeing
Schools play an important role in supporting the positive emotional wellbeing of their pupils. Having good mental health can make the difference in being able to access education at all. The Coram Group of children’s charities supports thousands of children and young people every year, championing children’s rights and wellbeing and providing access to life skills education, cultural programmes and mental health support. Combining expertise from three
charities in the group (Coram Life Education, Coram Beanstalk and Coram Shakespeare Schools Foundation), they have launched a Mental Wellbeing Toolkit for schools. Based on the NHS’s Five Steps to
Mental Wellbeing framework, the toolkit addresses each of the five ways to wellbeing: connect with others, be active, take notice, learn and create, and give to others. It contains lesson plans, age- appropriate stories and activities to help children develop the core skills they need to maintain positive mental health habits. The flexible resources include
lesson plans on inspiring pieces of writing, including Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers for key stage 1 and After the War by Tom Palmer for key stage 2, with circle time activities and talking points; collaborative drama activities for the whole class that encourage children to bond and find a connection; and specially
curated book lists and book chat questions designed to help children connect with characters, places, situations and each other. Teachers can use the toolkit to support their activities during Children’s Mental Health Week (3-9 February 2025) or delve into the resources throughout the academic year. The Mental Wellbeing Toolkit is
free. Schools can sign up for access by filling in the online form at the Coram Life Education website.
