FUNDRAISING – Festive fundraisers

Top five festive

fundraisers Daniel Etherington has some easy ways to boost your coffers this Christmas

Tea towels

Give family members a stocking filler they can use every day. Traditional one-colour PTA tea towels carry a self-portrait by each child in a class or school, but full-colour digital printing means you can push the creative boundaries. Ask each class to collaborate on a piece of artwork with a Christmas theme or incorporate pupils’ photography into your design. There may be a long lead time, so start planning at the beginning of the autumn term to guarantee they’re ready on time.

Mugs, keyrings, tote bags, T-shirts coasters, aprons...

Most Christmas card suppliers also sell a range of other gifts based on the children’s artwork. Bespoke gifts such as these make great presents for those ‘impossible to please’ family members.

Christmas cards

The quintessential personalised Christmas item, cards are readily available from multiple online suppliers with different fundraising options for the PTA. As with any printed items, you will need

to plan well in advance to meet the important deadline for sending to friends and family. Typically, it will take around six weeks from sending the designs to a supplier to receiving them back for distribution. So, make sure pupils create their designs by November at the latest. Personalised cards are a great way to

raise funds and provide a lovely experience for parents as they watch their children’s artwork evolve over the years.

Calendars

Having instant digital access to appointments and meetings is useful, but a paper calendar shows the big picture and is ideal for busy families. Calendars are memorable, practical and profitable for the PTA. Divide the 12 spaces for artwork among your school’s classes or years and include key fundraising and event dates. You can even add reasons to support the PTA and sell advertising to boost profits.

Christmas jumper sale

Everything has its season, but a Christmas jumper has a very short shelf life. Ask parents for donations of old Christmas jumpers that their children have outgrown. Request that they wash them first. Either hold a pop-up sale in the playground or photograph them and sell online. You can also ask parents to donate adult-sized festive sweaters. Aim to hold your sale to coincide with Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day, which usually takes place two weeks before Christmas.
