GRANTS FOR SCHOOLS IN RURAL AREAS

British Science Association: British Science Week Kick Start Grants These annual grants, available in the autumn, enable schools to obtain funding for science projects during British Science Week the following March. Ranging in value from £150 to £700, depending on project delivery and level of participation, the grants are intended to engage children who might not otherwise choose to participate in science. Available to schools in ‘challenging circumstances’, small rural schools are one of three categories of educational establishment eligible to apply. britishscienceweek.org

‘Learning outside has been shown to improve personal and social development, as well as emotional wellbeing’

teacher (for a donation of £15 or more) or throw an icy bucket of water over a teacher (£20 or more). We also received donations of rewards from our community, including a framed painting by a local artist (for a donation of £80 or more) and several places on a print-making workshop for people who donated £50 or more. One person even donated £500 for the reward of naming the outside classroom. In total we raised an incredible

£15,200 from 219 supporters during the month. Judges from Calor then assessed the finalists on impact sustainability, submission and originality – and we were lucky enough to win one of the top £5,000 awards. Our classroom is due to be built in

the summer, however we have purchased some equipment for it already and the children have enjoyed pond dipping with it. Anna Guttridge, Allendale Primary School, Northumberland

Calor Rural Community Fund Available to organisations in areas off the mains gas grid, this crowdfunding initiative provides a platform for projects to be publicised and donations collected (see left). Calor then provides Rural Community Fund grants of up to £5,000 from an £85,000 funding pot to top up the money raised. Applications open once a year, in spring, with crowdfunding taking place in the summer. Projects can be for anything that will gain the support of local communities and impress Calor’s judges. Successful school projects in the past have included a refurbished pond area and an adventure playground. communityfund.calor.co.uk/
