Bettina Heffner, Lois’s friend of more than twenty years, is her future next-door-neighbor on the sixth floor at Landis Place on King. Bettina has lived just blocks from her friend for decades, enjoying city living from homes on North Prince and North Mary Streets for almost 50 years. She says, “I love my city community. Community is critical to a healthy life, and I look forward to the resources that we’ll be able to connect to because of living at Landis Place on King.”

A

s members of the Lancaster Downtowners, both women became aware of the Landis Communities mission. Lois noted, “If I’m going to be a renter, Landis sounds like a landlord who will honorably run and maintain my home building. Tat is very important to me.” In addition to

living next to her dear friend, Lois looks forward to a community of age 55+ peers. “We have things in common. At this stage in my life, I like that security.”

Although Lois has put a plan in place for long-term care if she needs it, she said, “My goal is to live independently for as long as I am mentally and physically able. I would like to stay in this next apartment for the rest of my life, if that turns out to be feasible.”

Lois noted that the Landis Communities organizational commitment to inclusion sealed the deal on her future home. “One thing that helped me make up my mind to commit to this apartment in particular is the stated goal of maintaining the neighborhood’s diversity. Not gentrifying this area, but improving it, together, for all the residents is very important.”

Bettina explained that she made the choice to move into Landis Place on King because of the unique supports for seniors. “Te care navigator and the full-time maintenance person, plus a doctor at some point—combine that with the location and my trust of Landis Communities as the developer—all without putting out the big bucks for continuing care made my decision to live at Landis Place on King an easy choice.”

"Without a sense of community, joy is missing. Seniors have a really neat way of

supporting each other."

Although the ladies love to walk downtown, Lois notes that her current home’s four stories were becoming a challenge, but she still wanted more than one bedroom. “And the balcony was a key feature for me being downtown,” Lois shared. Bettina added, “I love the fact that there’s a terrace on the top floor, a community space, and an exercise room. Plus, there’s indoor parking!”

Even before all the apartments have been rented, there are already friendships forming among the future Landis Place on King neighbors. “Without a sense of community, joy is missing. Seniors have a really neat way of supporting each other,” Bettina said. “Plus,” she promises, “Lois and I are going to share our dinner on the balcony!”
