CULTIVATING WELLNESS

“WHAT IS PICKLEBALL?”

That’s a question many may ask when looking through the Pathways Institute for Lifelong Learning®

2022 course catalog.

“Pickleball is something great almost everyone can do,” says Peggy Gerhard, instructor for the course ‘Introduction to Pickleball.’ “It is a combination of badminton, ping pong, and tennis, and can be taught to anyone between the ages of 10-84. It’s very safe for seniors!”

STAYING FIT AND HAVING A BALL

native of Lancaster County, Peggy Gerhard graduated from Millersville University with a double major in Elementary Education and Library Sciences. “I feel God has worked through me to bring joy to learning,” Peggy says. “I always wanted the kids to be taught something authentic and at their level when I helped with their reports.”

When Peggy retired after 36 years of teaching, she was looking for an outlet. “Pickleball was a hard sell at first,” says Peggy, “but my sister and another friend got interested in it and helped me learn the basics. Soon, I began receiving instruction, and I fell in love with it. It just clicked.”

After years of playing Pickleball and really enjoying it, Peggy used her past experience as a teacher to begin teaching others. “I wanted to share this with people - especially older people who felt they couldn’t exercise. Tis is a sport they can do safely, and have fun.”

“In playing Pickleball, you’re working together, and you’re getting to know people better through an endeavor that builds community and brings joy to those involved,” Peggy says. “It fits perfectly with the mission of Landis Homes.”
