A Career Dedicated to Education
CROSSING CULTURES IN OUR COMMUNITY
‘Communicating Cross Culturally’ at Pathways Institute, is no stranger to different cultures. She was born and raised in Abington Township near Philadelphia, and her father was a real estate broker who worked in a town with a predominantly Puerto Rican clientele.

After receiving her Doctorate in Educational Anthropology, Judith and her husband Sherwood did their doctoral research on the small island of Yap in the Pacific Ocean, and they lived there for three different periods of time over 10 years. “While in Yap, they had a desperate need for elementary school teachers,” says Judith. “So, I decided to teach a class of 1st – 3rd graders. Te most difficult part about teaching wasn’t the language barrier. It was that there were six different cultures represented in this one classroom of 25 children.”

In 2019, the Lingenfelters moved to Lancaster County to be closer to their son and his family. Tey visited Landis Homes and were impressed with the focus on serving one another, something they felt passionate about. Tey became residents and almost immediately Judith began volunteering at the general store. Tere she has met many wonderful people, some of whom have lived and worked in other countries.
Judith decided to teach a Pathways course to connect with people who were at the end of their careers. “God still has a plan for you even in your later years,” Judith says. “Tis year Lancaster is planning to resettle 700-1000 Afghan immigrants and is calling on churches to help in this process. It seemed like a good time to talk about cross-cultural differences and how we can communicate with those that God has brought to our part of the country. Pathways has given me the opportunity to interact with people who desire to expand their understanding, and these adult education classes are a real gift to the community at large.”
