Lives, Together

at Landis Homes in 2014, Don brought along both of these hobbies. He was a founding member of the resident group, Friends of the Woods & Wetlands, that give time to being good stewards of the natural areas on campus.

“I enjoy teaching and leading others in supporting our unique ecosystem with native pollinator bees, butterflies and other insects, and in planting native flowers to support pollinators, in planting and grafting native trees, especially pawpaw and persimmon,” said Don.

Don is a regular at the fitness center where he takes multiple classes, including seasonal outdoor yoga and strength training. He is also a member of the resident anti-racism group that started in 2020. One of many residents who have his own vegetable garden, Don says, “Te community gardens provide a satisfying connection with the soil and with other gardeners.”

Don says he especially appreciates life on campus, which he has experienced as having less stress and responsibility. “I sink into relaxation a bit more each year,” said Don. “I appreciate the slower pace with more quiet, contemplative time at home as well as times of solitude and silence in the woods, gardens and on the paths. I enjoy meeting others along the way who have so much life wisdom available for the asking.”

“I experience Landis Homes as an interesting, intentional community,” said Don. “Like no other place I have lived, there is so much kindness and gentleness here in how we treat each other. Our thoughtful stewardship of resources, our environment and each other further strengthens our community.”
