To her delight, an email on her 70th birthday did in fact bring exciting news – an apartment was finally available! Trilled, Sonja moved back to PA just 30 days later to join the community managed by HDC Mid-Atlantic together with Landis Communities.
Ever since then, Jane said, Sonja Evans has been a God- send to the community. Sonja has a passion for service and a deep care and empathy for others. She is always on the look-out for new ways to serve her fellow residents. She delivers packages to others. When it snows, she volunteers to help shovel out cars. “You know your limits, but I try to help as many people as I can by shoveling cars out, so that they don’t have to worry about it,” Sonja said.
When area neighbors, Darlene and David Flaud, organized a giveaway of Zook’s chicken pies and cookies for residents, Sonja coordinated deliveries for those who could not attend the event to pick-up their orders.
“Sonja is setting the example,” said Jane, of Sonja’s enthusiastic service. “She’s cheerful and energetic.”
Sonja attributes all of her energy and enthusiasm to God. “I feel a calling in life to be a helper for seniors,” she said. “I’ve been blessed with energy and it brings me pleasure to be God’s servant. I tell (residents who thank me) to give God glory because He’s the one who gives me strength, energy, and motivation to do it.”
Sonja enjoys Mountain View Terrace so much that she shared her experience with one of her friends in Florida. Te woman was from Maryland and loved the sound of Mountain View Terrace. She also applied and, in March, she moved in just down the hall from Sonja, adding to the already vibrant community there.
Community is one aspect of Mountain View Terrace that has deeply impacted Sonja. Not only does she attend a socially distanced Bible study of six to eight women, but she’s connected with other women in her hall who meet regularly to play games and deepen their relationships with one another.
At Mountain View Terrace, Sonja also experiences lots of joy. She’s not only found joy in her new friendships and the environment, but in the change of scenery itself. She enjoys being back in the familiarity of Pennsylvania. “I love the horses and buggies,” she said. “And I love Shady Maple.”
Sonja’s compassionate heart is mirrored in other residents daily. “We all really help each other,” she said. “We check on each other every day.” Sonja has not only been blessed by living at Mountain View Terrace, she’s also a vital part of the service and community.
