Downtowners Create Art

That Connects F

Travelers passing through the Lancaster Amtrak Station are now greeted by a photo montage created by the Lancaster Downtowners.

unded through a City of Lancaster public art grant, the installation transforms photos into a mosaic celebrating

Lancaster City and County. T e idea came from Mimi Shapiro, a graphic designer and fi ne artist who loves collaboration. “It takes a village, bringing people together for a common goal,” she said. “Creativity is a life skill.”

After returning from teaching a creativity workshop in Mexico, Mimi invited fellow Downtowners Sharon Stephan and Andy Berfond (a resident of Landis Place on King) to apply for the grant. T ey asked members to share photos of daily life. “T e biggest surprise was how many Downtowners took this idea seriously,” Mimi said. “It was thrilling to see the images as they came in.”

Sharon, whose background spans fi ber arts and museum curation, said the project revealed “the pride we have in our Lancaster City community.” Andy added, “Mimi often walks around the city taking pictures of moments that catch her eye. I do the same, and I think you know the rest.”

T e fi nished collage groups photos by color and theme, forming what Mimi calls “fragments and glimpses into where we live, a puzzle showing that our lives are not linear.”

Lancaster Downtowners is an independent non-profi t organization that engages in a collaborative partnership with Landis Communities via a Management Services Agreement to facilitate offi ce space, Human Resources for staff , and consultation with select centralized services.
