Friendships often begin in the simplest of ways at Landis Adult Day Services. For Charles Ream and Bobby Hainley, it started at the puzzle table. Since then, their friendship has become part of their daily rhythm, as reliable as the morning Uno game at 9:45.

Each Day, Together
harles, 93, and Bobby, 89, both come to ADS five days a week. Tey fill their days with puzzles, card games, and conversations that make the hours pass quickly. “Tey like to keep
you busy here, so things like puzzles are enjoyed,” Charles said with a smile. Bobby nodded in agreement, adding simply, “It’s true.”
Both men bring with them a lifetime of stories. Charles was a driver and salesman for 65 years, a career he calls “a very good job with good people.” Twice married and the father of six children, he credits his family and friendships with keeping him youthful. “I meet people easily. I like to talk to anyone who will talk to me,” he said. Bobby, who worked in a factory for many years, was married for 25 years before his wife passed away. He now lives with his wife’s sister and her husband in Lititz.
Charles is known among staff and clients alike as the head of the unofficial welcoming committee. He makes a point of greeting new people, showing them around, helping them find a seat for lunch or activities, and making sure they feel at home. “When new people come here, they know no one, and that’s hard,” he said. “I just try to help.” Bobby has seen the way this simple kindness has an impact. “Charles is well-liked. He tries to get along with everyone here—and he does!”
For both men, what makes ADS meaningful is the community found there. “Te people who work here and the people who attend, they’re very nice to me and it gives me something to do all day,” Charles said. Bobby echoed the thought: “Tey do, they help a lot.” Charles went on to say, “You’d be surprised what they do with people to help them. Te women who work here are wonderful. Tey do amazing things with the people.”
Leone Wagner, Activities Coordinator at Landis Adult Day Services, sees their bond as something special. “Looking at Charles and Bobby you might never guess how many years they have lived and how they have endured the loss of their spouses,” she reflected. “At ADS, these two men found common ground as they shared coffee and then a puzzle. Both men are evidence of the saying: ‘Kind hearts are the gardens. Kind thoughts are the roots. Kind words are the blossoms. Kind deeds are the fruits.’”

Kind deeds are the fruits.”
Te Landis Communities guiding value of Joy best describes both men. Teir days at ADS are filled with simple pleasures, a puzzle completed, a round of Uno, a shared laugh over coffee, and the happiness of being together. For Charles and Bobby, joy is something they bring to life each day.
