IN-DEPTH: STAFF ENGAGEMENT
HAPPIER TEAMS
We look at three teams who have created supportive environments in which they can learn and grow together.
RECOGNISING THE CHALLENGES IN CANCER NURSING
When the cancer nursing team at Charing Cross Hospital was facing a high vacancy rate and staff turnover, they decided to take action to improve their working lives.
“We were successful at recruiting new nurses, however many were also leaving,” says Rebecca Johl, senior nurse for oncology. “We came up with ideas to provide more support to our junior nurses and really get them enthusiastic about nursing in oncology.”
Drawing on the wealth of expertise from long-term staff, senior nurses designed in-house study days to help new and more junior staff better understand the specialty and become more confident in their practice. The team also made changes to improve staff wellbeing and offered

“We improved our induction for new staff – tailoring this to each individual. Some of the nurses found end of life care quite hard to deal with, so we set up monthly reflection sessions with the Trust’s clinical psychology team which staff have really welcomed.” These measures have significantly improved staff recruitment and retention – the team has even been shortlisted for the 2018 Nursing Times workforce awards.
“We’re getting even more interest from external applicants and our own staff are staying. The whole team worked to bring about these changes and we are managing to sustain the benefits.”
