Youth volunteers make a difference at Hammersmith Hospital
We were excited to launch our youth volunteering programme at Hammersmith Hospital this summer, offering young people the chance to give back to their local community, develop new skills and gain valuable experience in a hospital while making a difference for patients. The programme gave 30 volunteers aged16 to 25 the chance to sample a number of different roles within the hospital, including: helping at mealtimes on wards; assisting customers in the shops; meeting and greeting in outpatients clinics; and providing companionship to patients on wards. Cooper Shaw, who turned 18 during the programme, said: “I decided to volunteer because I’m thinking of pursuing a career in medicine and this is a great way to get experience while giving back to the community.”
Fatima Elshams, 17, added: “I’ve gained a lot of confidence but also communication skills.
“By speaking to a range of people, from patients to nurses, I’ve been able to see that the ward isn’t just a doctor’s workplace – there is a whole team of people behind them.”
Chris Neal, youth volunteering manager at Imperial Health Charity, said: “As well as providing a new type of volunteering opportunity for local young people, we have also been able to shine a positive light on the impact that young people can have on the hospital community.”
Following on from the success of the programme, the charity will be recruiting for more young people to get involved and develop their own skills at Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals, as well as launching the youth volunteering summer programme across both sites in March 2019.
