IN-DEPTH: NETWORKING

NETWORKING CHANGE

Grassroots, self-organising networks are popping up across the Trust, giving staff the opportunity to develop new professional relationships and achieve change, as well as providing a supportive space to discuss important issues

NURSING AND MIDWIFERY BAME NETWORK

Recognising the diversity within our nursing and midwifery workforce in particular, Professor Janice Sigsworth, our director of nursing, initiated the establishment of a network to support and connect nurses and midwives from black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities across the Trust.

“Nurses and midwives from BAME communities provide an enormous contribution to the leadership and delivery of great care at our Trust,” says Janice. “At our first meeting, members talked about sharing experiences and ideas; showcasing their own cultures; helping colleagues joining us from overseas to acclimatise; and having a space to input strategically into the direction of nursing and midwifery at the Trust. I see this network supporting and connecting staff across our hospitals and I am really looking forward to seeing it grow from strength to strength.” The new BAME nursing and midwifery network is just a few months old but its initial 20 members are enthusiastic about its potential.

“Having a BAME network reflects the Trust’s values: to be kind, collaborative, expert and aspirational,” says Noni Nyathi, ward manager for the acute assessment unit at St Mary’s Hospital. “I hope the group can identify role models to inspire staff from ethnic minority backgrounds to pursue leadership roles. I’d also like to see more wider support for BAME leadership development and I’m looking forward to our network helping to make that happen.”
