THEN AND NOW:
WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE TRUST? June 1985
WHICH HOSPITALS HAVE YOU WORKED AT?
I worked at St Mary’s Hospital until 2010, when I changed roles and moved to Charing Cross.
HOW HAS YOUR ROLE CHANGED? During my time at St Mary’s I was a biomedical scientist working in the blood bank. St Mary’s becoming a major trauma centre presented considerable challenges for the blood bank as blood demand increased and often products were needed at very short notice. But I was pleased to support this excellent service as IT plays an invaluable role in
Autumn 2018

Martin Malins, IT lead for haematology, Charing Cross Hospital
Hospital. IT is a vital aspect of the modern NHS, and the Trust is at the forefront of moving towards paperless hospitals. This allows staff to concentrate on patients rather than manual admin work.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THE TRUST? The friendly faces and helpful attitudes I encounter, both directly in my work and in the way many departments interact with our users.
ensuring the laboratories are able to track and release blood products quickly.
WHAT HAS KEPT YOU HERE? I’ve now moved into an IT supporting role for the laboratories across the Trust and at Chelsea and Westminster
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT?
I’m a bit of train enthusiast so it would have to be watching Sir Roger Bannister naming an InterCity train after St Mary’s Hospital. I still feel very proud when I walk past the painting of the occasion!
