Xylem analytics platform wins smart monitoring award
An integrated software and analytics platform helping water utilities to reduce combined sewer overflows has been recognised at the Water, Wastewater & Environmental Monitoring(WWEM) event.
Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua (XVPGA) won the award for Smart Network Monitoring at a ceremony at the NEC, Birmingham, UK, on 9 October 2024.
The platform, which provides a complete view of both water and wastewater networks,
was built through a partnership between technology provider Xylem and data management specialist Idrica, which is headquartered in Spain.
The WWEM award judges heard examples of the technology being successfully applied to support wastewater network optimisation in the USA.
• The Buffalo Sewer Authority in the city of Buffalo, NY, implemented XVPGA’s real-time control programme to reduce storm overflow volume by a total of 5.6 million cubic metres.
• When the platform was implemented in the US city of South Bend, Indiana, dry weather overflows were eliminated and storm overflow volumes into Saint Joseph River reduced by more than 70 percent.
• In the city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, XVPGA was used to assess planned inflow and infiltration mitigation projects, helping reduce capital infrastructure programme needs from over US$1 billion to less than US$50 million.
• In the UK, a number of utilities are evaluating the benefits of deploying the technology to help reduce the impact of CSO spills, the outcomes of which will be easily observed by the data collection requirements of Section 82 of the Environment Act 2021.
Barry Hopton, head of client relationships at Xylem UK, said: “The recognition of Xylem Vue powered by GoAigua for smart network monitoring highlights how digital innovation can truly transform water management.
“As we continue to see the power of artificial intelligence and digital twin technologies reducing spills and improving river health, it is exciting to think about what’s coming next. Collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to protecting our waterways make a big difference.”
