Pioneering Water Jetting Academy wins praise

A new training organisation aiming to set a new standard in water jetting training has delivered its first courses with strong feedback for the quality of facilities and tuition provided.

The Water Jetting Training Academy (WJTA) has developed a new approach to training to give drainage contractors greater certainty that their training will not be disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has opened a large bespoke training centre on the site of Poole Process Equipment Ltd, in Poole, Dorset, a leading manufacturer of heat exchangers and fin fans and part of the ASL Group.

This challenges the current approach to Water Jetting Association (WJA) training which is usually delivered at client sites. It also allows additional courses to be provided. The academy now also offering first aid training, with more courses planned.

Colin Leslie, owner of CTL Works Ltd, a drainage and plumbing contractor, in Plymouth, and his apprentice attended the WJA safety awareness course and the drain and sewer practical module at the academy.

He said: “I wanted to be sure of the kind of facilities the training will take place to maximise COVID-19 safety, and the WJTA centre was brilliant on this score. Every detail

of social distancing and personal protection was thought of.

“The quality of training was also excellent. The facilities the academy has for practical learning and the detail they went into during the course meant I learned a lot more than I thought I would. It was very impressive and must be the way forward.”

Dr Robert Kennedy, Head of Research & Development and Training at the WJTA, said they have been pleased with client response, not least because candidates understood what they were aiming to achieve.

Instead of trying to provide high quality training in often compromised environments at client sites, the WJTA guaranteed a COVID- 19 secure environment and facilities specifically designed for water jetting.

He added: “Drainage contractors need operational certainty more than ever. They also want the best training outcomes, with skills passed on effectively. That’s what our academy aims to do. We want to break the mould and our clients can see that already.”

The WJTA offers City & Guilds-accredited courses across the WJA syllabus, including the safety awareness (SA) theory course and all practical modules – drain and sewer (DS), surface preparation (SP), tube and pipe (TP), and hydrodemolition (HD).

Infection control and disinfection protocols are designed to exceed government requirements. The academy aims to attract clients that seek more effective training planning, including mobilising new contracts or carry out bespoke training for new working practices or equipment.

The WJTA is part of a new training and research division within the ASL Group, which delivers a wide range of water jetting services to the utilities, oil and gas and petrochemical industries in Great Britain and overseas, including operating its own site in the Middle East.
