The company’s active role meant that the A14 Integrated Delivery Team did not have to evaluate competing supplier offers and this simplified the management of the materials. Through collaboration and coordination of the supply chain, the newly upgraded A14 opened to traffic eight months ahead of schedule.
Effective supply chain management is essential if the growing pipeline of infrastructure projects are to be delivered efficiently and as the construction sector continues on its road to recovery, it is vital that the supply chain works collaboratively. Merchants have a unique position in the supply chain to help facilitate this; offering specialist product knowledge, advice and services that, if utilised early enough, are key to improving the productivity, quality and efficiency of infrastructure construction projects.
Another example of supply chain collaboration comes from Stanton-Bonna when from Dorking to Monkton to the West Midlands, standing water needed removing. Council and highways engineers worked closely with Stanton Bonna’s technical team to produce two key innovative drainage products that help rapidly remove surface water from motorways, main roads and country lanes.
Since the beginning, these flexible products have been further developed to improve their handling, installation speed and efficiency. Both are manufactured offsite ensuring quality and accuracy to each project requirement and provide quicker, safer, cost effective installations.
Surrey County Council Engineers knew they needed something different to help with increasing instances of standing water, after

heavy rainfall, in sensitive areas around the county.
The Stanton Bonna technical team, Saint- Gobain PAMUK and the council highway engineers worked together on a precast concrete high capacity gully. This group of experts helped provide valuable knowledge and experience while using the latest technology, including 3D drawings, to produce the first precast prototype.
The first modular precast unit was installed over a two night schedule at the Belmont roundabout on the A217 Banstead. The unit was highly efficient, removing standing water from the road. After further trials and adaptions to smaller manageable component’s, this system is currently being successfully utilised in multiple sites around the country.
Known as the Super Gully it now consists of a three-part chamber with cover and kerb with ductile iron gratings. It is a quick to install, low maintenance solution, which reduces the pressure on local authorities to perform preventative works. The dangers of standing
water are reduced and the time between planned maintenance schedules can increase.
Stanton Bonna also worked with Kier and other main contractors to develop a precast Slot Drain system to overcome common challenges that occur using the wet-cast extruding technique on motorway upgrade projects.
Developing a new product from scratch enabled the move to a wet cast method with steel moulds, taking on board lessons learned from the sister Slot Drain product which is a machine made dry cast product.
Known as the Aqua-Slot™ Drain it has gasketed socket and spigot joints and a smooth internal bore allowing for optimum hydraulics, which aids flow through system. The trapezoidal shaped slots allow quick entry of water and pull detritus through to prevent blocking.
Working to area maintainers’ specific requirements, ductile iron gratings with captive hinges and an integral spring bar release mechanism are provided by Saint- Gobain PAMUK as a bespoke product to be incorporated into to the Aqua-Slot™ Drain.
