Apprenticeship Standard
Energy & Utility Skills, in collaboration with industry, training providers and trade associations including the NADC, has led the development of the new Drainage Network Operative Apprenticeship Standard. This apprenticeship has been developed at the request of industry to ensure the skilled workforce required for this critical role is available.
Drainage Network Operatives maintain sewerage systems in domestic and commercial settings and private and public drainage systems, including highways. They use various equipment and vehicles to quickly respond to and investigate drainage issues whilst adhering to operating procedures with health and safety as a priority.
Duties in the apprenticeship standard include responding to customer callouts, blockages, and flooding emergencies and performing planned maintenance; identifying obstructions using investigation techniques and locating and
identifying structural and service condition defects; clearing roots and blockages with drain rods and high-pressure water jetting and confirming blockages have been removed.
Approved for delivery by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE) with maximum funding of £9,000 available, the Drainage Network Operative apprenticeship duration will typically be 18 months, followed by the end-point assessment. Funding will be possible when an end-point assessment organisation has obtained Ofqual recognition.
Energy & Utilities Independent Assessment Service (EUIAS) is planning to offer the end-point assessment for this apprenticeship. EUIAS is the awarding organisation for technical and safety- critical apprenticeships for energy and utilities industries, working with employers, training providers and further education colleges to provide end-point assessments for standards across the sector.
Paul Carter, Skills Engagement Manager, Energy & Utility Skills, said, “We are delighted that this apprenticeship has been approved and want to thank those who have helped make this possible. The launch of this apprenticeship standard will help to attract new talent into the industry and provide the safe, skilled and sustainable workforce required for the future.”
