New research on


Explosive Atmospheres Improving understanding of risk and driving safety across the water industry


that will lead to greater confidence and new best practice in assessing the risk of explosive atmospheres. This new work, representing over £200k of investment by the participating companies, is made possible due to our combination of technical specialists, fieldwork experience and unique laboratory facilities. It will provide robust and credible evidence to ensure equipment is appropriately specified for different environments accounting for the relevant asset risk.

WRc's senior wastewater consultant Rod Palfrey comments: "Previous Explosive Atmosphere Risk Assessment projects carried out by WRc in 1993 and 2004 provide a methodical approach that underpins current tools. Now is the right time to enhance these with new information, particularly taking advantage of techniques that will allow an improved understanding of biomethane generation at wastewater and sludge sites."


Sam Harris, Resilience specialist at Severn Trent Water comments: "At Severn Trent we take our responsibilities for safety very seriously and we want to make sure we have the best possible understanding of risks when making our DSEAR assessments. It important to review what we do to drive continuous improvement and we believe this WRc project will help ensure the most appropriate and effective control measures are applied to our assets."
