The Hill & Friends letting was only made possible by Grosvenor transforming the existing space at no.63. Grosvenor’s Commercial Leasing Manager, Jack Haining, reports: “We got vacant possession of the store and completely reconfigured it to suit the needs of a contemporary retailer. This involved restructuring the lay-out of the building and extensively upgrading its fabric”.

The street will also achieve another first with the arrival of a major French lingerie brand which has chosen South Molton Street for its debut London store.

Another new arrival on the street is the Spanish fashion brand, TBA which has opened its doors at no.54. The brand offers unique equestrian inspired fashion and accessories for women and men with an accent on dramatic tweeds and one-off pieces.

Sara Law reports: “TBA is very much influenced by the cultural heritage of its founders the sisters Lopez de Carrizosa and their family background in rural southern Spain. ‘Eclectic’ is perhaps an over-used word in fashion, but their collections are truly original and varied”.

However, it is a forthcoming opening of a two-month pop-up store at no.20 which is most likely to get the shopping blogs buzzing about South Molton Street.

Sézane was France’s first online-only fashion label and has developed an almost fanatically devoted following. It was founded by Parisian, Morgane Sézalory, who had a background in selling vintage wares on eBay before she started creating her own designs and launched a website to sell them.

Lea comments: “Having developed an incredible online following – it has more than 500,000 Instagram followers – the brand is now venturing into physical retailing and it is brilliant that they have chosen South Molton Street to trial that in London”.

If the recent opening of Sézane’s New York store is anything to go by (queues around the block) then South Molton Street’s pedestrianised spaces will come in handy to accommodate the crowds.

Grosvenor is also looking to capitalise on the street’s boulevard-feel to upgrade the eating and drinking amenity. Flocafe has opened at no.40 and Jak’s café and bar is also busy at no.43.

Joanna Lea observes: “The recent lettings demonstrate the amazing potential that the street has and also the special place it still occupies in London’s retail landscape”.

“ I’ve always loved the street. When I was growing up it was a fashion mecca, home to the bravest, coolest independent

fashion brands.” – Emma Hill
