Weather outlook
Early look at U.S. winter weather
SPONSORED BY T
his year, another warm start to winter is expected, and above normal tempera- tures are expected across most of North America during December, with the exception of the West Coast where temperatures are expected to be near normal levels. Colder weather is expected in the northern Rockies by January, however, and a colder weather pattern is projected for the eastern United States by February. As a result, temperatures should average near normal levels for most areas this winter, with the relatively warm December balancing out a relatively cold February.
As far as precipitation is concerned, a wetter than normal winter is expected across the central and southern Plains and along the Gulf Coast, with the wettest conditions occurring during December and January. Near normal precipitation is expected across most of the Midwest and the Northeast, although below normal precipitation is expected in Missouri. Below normal precipitation is also expected for most of California and the Great Basin this winter.
Confidence in the forecast for this winter is lower than normal, as only a weak El Niño is currently expected. Looking beyond North America, El Niño events are typically associated with favorable growing conditions in South America.
