#ConservationWeek showcases water- saving irrigation techniques

Western Growers recently hosted #ConservationWeek where all WG social media accounts — Facebook, Twitter and Instagram — spread awareness on how farmers sustainably manage our land so it can be farmed for future generations. This includes implementing innovative irrigation technologies and techniques on the farm.

Throughout the week, WG posted videos and stories about the pioneering practices that have allowed farmers to grow more with fewer natural resources and farm in a way that enhances the environment.

One Instagram post discussed how Don Cameron of Terranova Ranch flooded his pistachio fields (using excess surface water that would have otherwise been shunted to the sea!) to build up his farm’s groundwater stores and help prevent setbacks with production during drought periods.

On Facebook, a video was posted highlighting how Joe L. Del Bosque of Del Bosque Farms utilizes drip irrigation across his entire farm, helping him save 35 percent more water and produce 35 percent more crop.

Congress briefed on efficient irrigation benefits

Irrigation Association Government and Public Affairs Director John Farner and CEO Deborah Hamlin joined John Vikupitz, Netafim USA’s president and CEO; Naty Barak, Netafim’s chief sustainability officer; and Kelly Garrett, corn and soybean farmer, during the summer for a briefing on Capitol Hill to discuss the importance of funding for efficient irrigation during the farm bill debate in Congress.

The goal of the briefing was to discuss the productivity and conservation benefits of irrigation and how efficient irrigation is crucial to a safe and reliable food supply.

Joined by Rep. Jim Costa, D-Calif., Farner and Vikupitz lead the panel discussion, focusing on the need to increase the tools available for farmers in the United States to invest in efficient irrigation technologies, especially given the current economic and regulatory challenges facing U.S. agriculture.

The IA plans to continue this irrigation technology series on Capitol Hill, focusing on different technologies during each session.

Still time to register!
