DR (typically for pump automation) and additional payments each time they participate in a DR event. However, to successfully participate in these programs and provide value both to the grid (change in demand) and the farm (financial incentives), several barriers need to be addressed. Lack of automation, perceived risk to crop and complexity of existing utility DR programs are a few barriers worth mentioning.

DR technologies, policies and markets are still evolving and need more research and development. DR is considered mature in most buildings and industrial sectors, but the agricultural sector (with significant DR potential) has yet to truly verse itself in those concepts. Our clean energy future will not be possible without the agricultural sector. Technology development that allows higher DR participation must be a priority, but educating the public and end users of electricity should be equally as important. Without mass adoption, DR will fail to serve its purpose. Without DR, our ambitious Renewable Portfolio Standard targets will end up undermining the electricity grid that we so heavily rely on.
